“To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

Company Description

Tesla produces luxury electric cars and solar roof panels.

Founded in 2003 by a group of engineers committed to redesigning an energy-efficient car that would be exciting to drive, Tesla’s first fully electric car was the Model S sedan released in 2012. Founder Elon Musk views creating affordable solar technology as the primary sustainable energy alternative. The company’s website tracks the carbon impact from Tesla vehicle owners, with over 2.5 million tons prevented from entering the atmosphere as fuel emissions to date.

In a 2006 blog post outlining “The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan”, Musk describes the overarching purpose of Tesla – and his reason for funding it – as a way “to help expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy.” The company is now in the midst of executing this plan, with each successive model being more a affordable and accessible alternative for the general public.
