“From seed to garment.”

Company Description

Founded in 2007, Kowtow is a women’s clothing brand with a minimalist and utilitarian aesthetic.

The company’s collections are made using only materials that are ethically and sustainably sourced. Kowtow’s garments are certified by internationally-recognized nonprofit organizations focused on production standards, such as the Fairtrade Labelling Organisations (FLO). With regular visits to their manufacturers in Kolkata and Mumbai, Kowtow ensures that all their workplaces operate with socially acceptable practices. In addition, the company’s factory in Kolkata, India, also funds Girls’ Education, Cow Shed, and Cow Donation programs in their farmers’ villages.

In an article in The Generosity Journal in 2014, they discussed just how far the Kowtow team will go to stay sustainable: “All Kowtow’s buttons are made from recycled hemp; parcels are sent out in recycled card packages. They haven’t yet found a source of sustainable, ethically produced zips, so Kowtow clothing doesn’t use them. They come up with inventive design solutions instead.”
